Mon, September 06: A Fixed Point in a Moving Sky
Psalm 119:105, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” A group of naval students had been assigned the task of individually navigating a small sailboat, at night, by themselves, upon the ocean. Attempting to use the stars as a guide, they found themselves steering in circles. Their instructor subsequently reminded them that ancient sailors, likewise used stars to steer by, but the helmsman had to keep changing stars all night because the heavens appear to move at night, due to the rotation of the earth. If a sailor bore toward the same star, as the students discovered, he would simply steer his ship in circles, and would never arrive at his destination. However, when using the North Star as a point of reference, sailors found navigation could be accomplished because the North Star was a fixed point—due to its location in proximity to the earth, its position was unaffected by the earth rotating on its axis. In a world where values and attitudes change depending upon the prevailing notions of society, if one were to attempt to chart their life’s course using the mores of cultural values, more than likely, they would find themselves navigating in circles. From one generation to the next, society changes and our culture is endlessly inundated with an unsettling barrage of moral swings—more often than not, in a direction away from the Judeo-Christian values our founding fathers held in sacred trust. Where, then, can one find stability? Is there a “North Star” from which to navigate one’s life? Notice our text this morning. The Psalmist points us to the clear guidance offered from God’s Word. He likens it unto a lamp for his feet and a light for his path. In those days small oil lamps were strapped to the ankles of people traveling at night, and those oil lamps would illuminate their path. Without such illumination, one could easily stray off course and be lost. Friend, do you ever feel as if you are navigating in circles? Do you ever feel as if you have lost your way? In an ever-changing world, there is a steady and reliable fixed point from which you can navigate—God’s precious Word. Its principles will guide you safely and transform this day and every day, into a new day.
